Supakling Project
SupaKling was a joint Community project between a music college, Supa Jam and Howard Russel who were managing the demolition and re-development of an historical employer and manufacturer of gaskets in the area, Klinger .
During the summer holidays with support staff from the SupaJam music college, a team of students gathered to share ideas to be displayed on the hoardings facing the main road near the college.
Being creative by nature, it didn’t take long for the students to come up with some dope designs displaying many images relating to the old factory, the area and a cocktail of vibrant and colourful spacey images and messages giving people hope for the future. During the project, many people tooted and shouted from their vehicles as they passed and some pedestrians stopped to share stories about the history of the place. Lots of workmen chatted to the artists as they painted including some of the main managers of the development company.
One of the students had already done some exploring, and had taken many photos and footage of the decayed building before the demolition process began. Some of these pictures were super enlarged and included in the final project. There were also massive enlargements originally taken by the companies photographer in the 70’s displaying some of the chemistry involved in making the original gaskets from long ago.
Supakling was inclusive at all skill levels and needs, a community project linking the past present and future, with members of the local community, with the developers and with SupaJam students from the amazing music college in Swanley!
